My education and courses in Humanities at the University of Arizona prepared me more than I ever expected in my career in event management and marketing. I took many of the skills that I developed from my time in college into many of my jobs in my career, such as critical thinking and analysis, intellectual humility, and the love for learning. These skills have been the foundation of good, thoughtful work in any field. The essential carry over from my classes to my career is the critical thinking mindset. Asking yourself questions forces you to dig deeper into your work, allows you to see things from new perspectives, and enables you to solve a problem creatively.

It also taught me intellectual humility by approaching every topic with the same two questions: What do I already know, and what do I need to learn? This has allowed me to set smart, achievable goals and avoid the trap of over-promising and under-delivering with clients. I have changed jobs throughout my career. My humanities courses provided me with ideal preparation by developing an awareness of cultural challenges that help to inform current and future cultural and workplace decision-making. I learned about thoughts and ideas from outside my specialist areas, which enhanced my creative thinking, made me aware of cultural differences, foreign cultures, and my ability to communicate and work with others. I work in global events and have worked in different parts of the world and talk to clients worldwide every day. My education at the University of Arizona has definitely been very beneficial to my career journey.
