What is IDS?

The IDS degree program is a broader, interdisciplinary course of study rather than a traditional major/minor. The Interdisciplinary Studies degree prepares students to think critically and analytically across multiple disciplines or fields of study. With a flexible degree program, you choose classes that are interesting and meaningful to you.

Students take the majority of their courses in an Emphasis, which requires 27 units. The remaining courses are taken in 3 different Concentrations, with 9 units required in each Concentration. The Emphasis and the Concentration themes are discussed in more depth on the emphases page.

Interdisciplinary Studies is the right major for you if:

  • You prefer a broader, interdisciplinary course of study rather than a traditional major/minor.
  • You have completed courses towards a specific major, but are no longer pursuing that path.
  • You have completed a diversity of coursework and want to apply those courses to a degree program.
  • You want a flexible degree program that lets you choose classes that are interesting and meaningful to you.
  • You are interested in career fields that do not require a specific academic major or certification.

"I like to tell other students to explore as much as you can and you will surely find something you are interested in."

If you are interested in pursuing one of our bachelor degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies, the program is offered at the University of Arizona main campus in Tucson and with Arizona Online. Please reach out to us at COH-IDS@arizona.edu with any questions about where to start your journey.

Note about Arizona Online: Each emphasis or degree track option for the IDS degrees is listed alphabetically by the theme first on Arizona Online's list of degrees. For example, you will find the Arts, Media, & Entertainment alphabetically under "A" rather than "I" for Interdisciplinary Studies.
