I was born and raised in Globe, Arizona. Fortunately, my mother was a teacher, then principal, then (first) woman board member of the board of education. There never was a question as to whether I would go to the University of Arizona, only what should my major be. Imagine my elation, then, when I sat in my first Humanities class, taught by a fellow with a classic German accent. Each subject was a joy to learn. Cataloguing them began as problematic, but soon the catalogue number didn't make any difference. It was the knowledge of how human beings of different backgrounds did things. The "how" didn't make as much of a difference as the "thing" or "things" that were accomplished. My undergraduate education was only the door opener for my graduate education obtained at the University of San Francisco School of Law. My legal practice received its focus because a Mr. Dorado wasn't advised of his legal rights upon arrest for the commission of a crime. That focus was broadened considerably by an understanding of a county's civil responsibilities and the means for undertaking them. Those means resulted in my moving to Washington DC to be chief of staff to a Member of the House of Representatives. Then, my abilities to convince others of different ways of doing things led me to South Africa where, for twenty years, I assisted the post-apartheid government in obtaining the public services infrastructure they needed in order to fulfill their responsibilities. I'm back in the US, trying to understand the role I can serve, through my church or otherwise, to defeat the Covid-19 pandemic.
