General Studies

When I was in college I was unsure of career path I wanted to take. I was initially pre-vet but my grades were not "A" and I was advised to consider pre-med. I went to pre-med club at U if A and never met a more obsessive-anal retentive group in my life. I couldn’t see my self that focused at the expense of all else. When I had to declare a major, I gravitated to general studies. I loved language, history, and government as well as science. It was perfect. I didn’t know if I would get into a medical school but I knew I would be well rounded and able to be successful in whatever I chose to do.

It was 1968 and Vietnam was at its height. I was fortunate. I was accepted to medical school in Guadalajara. I excelled in my studies. Most important , learned to love Mexican culture, history, architecture and the people. When I transferred to the University of New Mexico medical school and graduated in 1972, I learned to enjoy the Native American cultures as well as Hispanic. My career path was enhanced by my major of General Studies. I became well rounded and capable of dealing and thriving in adversity.. I had a career that allowed me to choose areas I loved. It spanned pathology, immunohematology, transplant immunity, and medical information technology. I loved that my college degree allowed me to reach my highest aspirations and succeed. I am retired now but would not change the decision to choose General Studies. It worked for me. Thank you U of A!
