IDS 396: Interdisciplinarity at Play: Sports and Society (7 week 2)
This course critically assesses the intersection of sports and power in the United States. Using approaches from multiple disciplines, students will study the political, economic, and social phenomena at play in the realm of athletics, from race and class to gender and sexuality. We will pay special attention to controversies in the sports world as they have manifested both historically and contemporarily. Who makes the rules? How is power rendered less visible by the rules of the game? Is competition ever “fair”? Students in this course will develop their capacities to synthesize multiple areas of study in their exploration of complex, real-world problems, as well as to think critically about sports and human performance as a site of power, possibility, and social struggle.
IDS 496 Interdisciplinarity at Work: Topics and Methods (7 week 1)
Real-world workplaces are complex environments to navigate, requiring interdisciplinary understanding and techniques. In this course, we will provide an overview of the different contexts where an interdisciplinary outlook and approach will be instrumental, from collaborating in a team environment to leadership and intercultural problem-solving. In particular, we will explore the value of comprehending and responding to the social contexts of modern employment, including issues of gender, race, globalization, capitalism, and ethics. The course will also engage with topics such as expertise, curiosity, technical and experiential knowledge, management versus leadership, and operational outlooks to study interdisciplinarity at work. Our study will be interdisciplinary, drawing on disciplines such as social psychology, economics, and communication. We will examine real-world case studies and hear from individuals who rely on interdisciplinary skills across industries and professions.
